Boulting Technology appoints new Managing Director

New captain for systems integrator

Established systems integration expert Boulting Technology has appointed Ian Oliver as its new managing director to oversee operations at its four UK locations. Having worked at the organisation since 1999, Ian has clear objectives for the company. These include maintaining Boulting Technology as a market leader in the UK for the delivery of low voltage (LV) panels and control systems and growing the company’s reputation as an employer of choice for experienced engineers.

Previously the process control director of Boulting Group, Ian’s technical expertise lies in electrical control systems and system integration utilising off-the-shelf automation products. Furthermore, Ian specialises in the implementation of systems into live works; a skill that Boulting Technology has become known for in recent years.

Ian began his career as a test engineer at Thorn Automation. His primary role was working with drive systems for the metals industry and his specific area of expertise was DC drives for heavy industrial applications. After a management buyout, Ian and a colleague approached Boulting Group with a business plan for the provision of systems integration capability. Consequently, Ian and four other employees of Thorn Automation set up a small office in Stafford and became the Process Control department of Boulting Group in February 1999.

From humble beginnings, the department grew and now has a team of more than 80 experienced engineers working in systems integration across four geographic locations.

“By providing an integrated offering of systems integration, LV panels and industrial network solutions, Boulting Technology is now better aligned to meet our clients’ requirements and expectations,” explained Ian. “This expansion sees me at the head of an incredibly skilled company and I intend to do everything I can to help Boulting Technology continue to provide excellent service. “As a naturally driven person, keen sailor and a part owner of sailing yacht Bon Accord, it is my life ambition to sail cross the Atlantic. Managing a company and sailing are alike in many ways – you need clear aims, a good sense of direction, plus a happy and skilled crew. You also need a bit of smooth weather!”
